Micro-Filtration Precision

How Reverse Osmosis Works

Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a precision molecular separation technology, not a simple porous mesh. It forces pressurized water through a semi-permeable thin-film composite (TFC) membrane whose pores measure a microscopic 0.0001 microns.

To put that in perspective: an average strand of human hair is 70 microns, and bacteria measure between 0.2 and 2 microns. The RO membrane only allows pure water molecules (H2O) to pass through, effectively rejecting dissolved salts, heavy metals (arsenic, lead, mercury), fluoride, nitrates, pesticides, and microbial cysts.

Because RO operates at such high filtration density, it is targeted specifically at drinking and cooking water—installed either under the kitchen sink or in a dedicated utility enclosure—feeding a dedicated lead-free countertop faucet and refrigerator ice dispensers.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

Beyond Standard Cartridge Filters

Standard sediment and carbon filters cannot remove dissolved minerals or dissolved metals because dissolved particles pass straight through standard filter media pores.

Only Reverse Osmosis actively drives down measured TDS, transforming heavy, mineralized tap water into crisp, bottle-quality water right in your kitchen.

Household Scenarios

Signs You Need a Home RO System

Consider an RO system if any of the following describe your home water setup or daily lifestyle:

◆

High TDS & Salty Brackish Taste

Water with Total Dissolved Solids exceeding 300–500 ppm, imparting a saline, metallic, or mineral taste to coffee, tea, and cooking.

⚖

Reliance on Sachet or Bottled Water

Tired of hauling heavy 19-litre dispenser bottles, managing plastic waste, or questioning the hygiene of commercial sachet water.

❤

Health & Infant Nutrition

Expecting mothers, families with infants preparing milk formula, or anyone seeking zero-contaminant water free of lead and nitrates.

⚠

Industrial or Mining Runoff Areas

Communities with potential groundwater exposure to trace heavy metals, agricultural pesticides, or aged municipal lead distribution pipes.

Component Anatomy

What Is Typically Included

Our residential reverse osmosis packages feature multi-stage filtration to protect the membrane and deliver immaculate water on tap:

Typical · Exact stage count, daily production capacity & remineralisation options confirmed on assessment
Stages 1–2

Sediment & Carbon Pre-Filters

Dual cartridge pre-treatment that removes rust, sand, silt, and crucially oxidising chlorine that would otherwise degrade the delicate polyamide RO membrane.

Stage 3

Thin-Film RO Membrane

High-rejection 50 to 100 GPD (gallons per day) composite membrane rejecting up to 98% of dissolved inorganic solids, arsenic, lead, fluoride, and pathogens.

Stage 4

Pressurized Storage Tank

Food-grade internal butyl diaphragm tank storing 8 to 12 litres of pure water, ensuring rapid flow when filling pots or drinkware without waiting for drop-by-drop filtration.

Stage 5

Post-Carbon Polishing & Faucet

Final coconut-shell carbon polishing cartridge for a silky, refreshing taste, paired with a dedicated lead-free stainless steel counter faucet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from whole-house filtration?

Whole-house filtration is a high-flow system designed to protect all household pipes, showers, and appliances from coarse sediment, rust, and chlorine. It does not remove dissolved solids or lower TDS. In contrast, Reverse Osmosis is a point-of-use drinking system that provides ultra-deep molecular purification specifically for human consumption.

Does Reverse Osmosis waste water?

Typical · Exact recovery ratios depend on incoming pressure and booster pump configuration

A cross-flow stream is necessary in all RO systems to wash concentrated rejected impurities away from the membrane, preventing pore blinding. Tovila installs high-efficiency modern membranes and automatic shut-off valves that minimise reject water. The reject water can also be routed to garden irrigation or greywater storage.

Can an RO system feed my refrigerator's ice maker?

Yes. Our installation technicians frequently run a discreet flexible line from the under-sink RO manifold directly to your refrigerator's water dispenser and automatic ice maker, yielding crystal-clear ice cubes free of cloudiness or strange flavours.

Does RO remove beneficial minerals?

RO removes all dissolved minerals, both harmful and benign. Tovila offers an optional alkaline remineralisation cartridge that re-introduces balanced, healthy traces of calcium and magnesium to achieve an optimal crisp pH profile.
