Germicidal Physics

How UV Disinfection Works

Ultraviolet disinfection utilises germicidal UV-C light at a precise wavelength of 254 nanometres. As water flows around a high-purity quartz sleeve housing the UV lamp, this intense radiation penetrates the cellular walls of microorganisms.

The UV-C energy rearranges the DNA and RNA bonds within pathogenic bacteria (such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Legionella), viruses, and chlorine-resistant parasitic cysts (including Cryptosporidium and Giardia). Rendered sterile, these organisms can no longer reproduce, infect, or cause illness.

Because UV is purely physical, it introduces zero chlorine, ozone, or chemical by-products. However, UV light requires clear water to be effective: it is always installed downstream of sediment pre-filtration to prevent suspended dust from shielding pathogens.

Critical Architecture Rule

Filtration First, UV Second

If cloudy or turbid water enters a UV chamber, microscopic silt particles cast "shadows" behind which bacteria safely slip past the light rays.

Tovila always engineers high-efficiency 5-micron pre-filtration directly before our UV reactors, guaranteeing 100% optical transmittance and certified germicidal dosages.

Risk Factors

Signs You Need UV Disinfection

Microorganisms are invisible to the naked eye. Water can appear crystal-clear while harbouring millions of living pathogens:

⚠

Borehole or Well Supply

Groundwater aquifers that sit near septic soak-aways, agricultural runoff, or fractured geological strata prone to seasonal coliform bacteria seepage.

♨

Stored Tanks & Cisterns

Overhead poly-tanks or underground reservoirs where stagnant warm water encourages bacterial biofilms and airborne pathogen growth.

❤

Vulnerable Household Members

Homes with infants, elderly grandparents, or immunocompromised individuals who cannot tolerate even mild microbial gut irritation.

☯

Desire for Chemical-Free Safety

Homeowners who reject chemical chlorination tablets, pungent bleach odours, or toxic disinfection by-products in their bath and shower water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does UV replace mechanical filtration?

No. UV is not a filter—it does not trap physical dirt, rust, or sediment. In fact, if sediment is present, it will shield bacteria from the ultraviolet rays. For this reason, UV is strictly installed as a post-filtration polishing stage following 5-micron sediment and carbon filtration.

Does UV change the taste, smell, or chemical balance of water?

Not at all. UV is 100% physical and chemical-free. It adds no chlorine, removes no minerals, creates no harmful trihalomethanes (THMs), and leaves the natural, refreshing taste of your water completely intact.

How often does the UV lamp need to be replaced?

Typical · Lamp replacement cycle: approx 9,000 hours / 12 months

Even though a UV bulb may still emit a visible blue glow after 12 months, the germicidal UV-C intensity drops below certified safety thresholds. Replacing the lamp once a year ensures consistent 99.99% pathogen destruction. Tovila sends automated service reminders and handles replacement on request.

Does the UV system consume a lot of electricity?

Very little. A typical whole-house residential UV system draws between 25 and 45 watts—roughly equivalent to a single standard household light bulb. It runs continuously to ensure that whenever any tap opens, the water passing through is instantly sanitized.
